Most famous sites

Here are five things to add on your bucket list for this year's holidays.

Skradinski buk is Krka's longest waterfall and one of the first thing that comes to mind first when you mention Krka. The cascades are composed of travertine barriers, islands and lakes.

Visovac island is located in the middle part of Visovac Lake. Besides its natural beauties most visitors will find 600 years old Franciscan monastery with museum and church located there pretty interesting.  Through Croatia's turbulent history the island has remained a place of peace, spirituality and faith. The Franciscans of Visovac have been known for their love towards life and its beauties so they have cultivated 80 out of 195 species of plants on the island. Fascinating for an island with only 17.376 meters of coastline, isn't it?

Oziđana pećina is a cave that is part of educational walking trail that holds a record of human presence from 5000 years B.C. Inside the cave there is an archaeological collection opened for visitations.

Burnum is an archaeological locality near Krka that has been a Roman military camp from 1st century. Today we can find preserved remains of amphitheater and arches of the military command center there.

If you head north from the coast to Lika region, surrounded by Plješevica and Velebit mountain, you will eventually find yourself looking at Croatia's most popular wonder of nature - Plitvice Lakes. The lakes are unavoidable if you visit Croatia. Why are they so special?

1. Biological and geological wonder

The lakes are build from limestone and dolomite, separated from each other by natural dams of travertine, which is deposited by the action of moss, algae and bacteria. Geographic position together with specific climate features resulted in emergence of many natural phenomena and a rich biodiversity within the area. It has been notes that there are 1267 spieces of flora in the Park, some of them endemic. There is 321 spieces of buterflies and moths, more then 50 spieces of mammals, 127 spieces of birds and 20 bat spieces.

2. Size and numbers

It is the biggest National Park in Croatia spread over 29482 ha. There are 16 lakes divided on Upper and Lower Lakes. Kozjak is the biggest lake - 81,5 ha, 47 m deep. There are about 30 caves in the Park.

3. The legend

The area of the lakes was called The devil's garden for a long time because of its position and history. According to the legend the lakes origin from time of great drought. The people of Lika prayed for the rain as they were dying for water, together with every other living being. The Black queen appeared to answer their prayers and started a rain so strong and long that the Lakes formed with all its beautiful shapes and colors.

4. The extremes

The tallest and the widest waterfall is called Veliki Slap (which literally means The Great Waterfall) and counts 70 meters of height! It is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the Park so don't miss it for the world!

Once you book here and start preparing for the big day, you might want to look up for some advice about do's and don'ts of the lakes. Good luck!

But did you know that Croatia has 1244 islands, islets and rocks (not the little ones you bump with your foot on the road but real big rocks that can have, for example, a lighthouse on it). Out of the 1244, 698 are islands and only 48 are inhabited with at least one person living there. That makes Croatia a country with highest number of islands in Adriatic Sea, and the second (after Greece) in the Mediterranean.

FUN FACTS:

➤Telašćica (Tilagus) got it's name by the fact that it looks like three lakes put together from the air (tre lagus)

➤The lake Mir on the south of Telašćica is unique in Croatia - the only salt lake on the coast! It is a geomorphological phenomena because it is connected with natural underground channels with Adriatic sea what makes it salty

➤On the South part of the Park you can find cliffs that hold interesting flora and fauna, including rare red corals

➤Telašćica is a place where donkeys roam free! In isolated areas like islands or mountains they were a great treasure in old times, but today people abandon them due to modern transport and easier connections. On Kornati islands they are taken care of and walk freely, always happy to meet visitors - especially if they bring carrots

➤Besides one of the most beautiful beaches in the world Saharun, on Dugi otok you can also find the tallest lighthouse of Adriatic. It's yellow color is explained with a local legend - it was painted with no more and no less then 100 000 eggs!

➤Kornati and Telašćica are home of dolphins, protected species in Croatia which only counts about 200 of them

➤ Ošljak is another interesting Island in Zadar region - it's the smallest inhabited island of Adriatic with only 0,34 sq-km,

Lavdara, Kornat, Žut, Lavsa... those are the islands that you can't reach with a public ferry or catamaran, you have to come with personal small boat. They are not inhabited and only have few small fisherman's houses that were build long time ago so the fisherman have somewhere to sleep on further and longer fishing trips.
